Men's Basketball Tops Wells College 85-78 To Stay on Top of NEAC North Division

Nunez Paces Leads Balanced Attack in 85-78 Win Over The Express


Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team overcame a five-point half time deficit to defeat visiting Wells College by an 85-78 margin in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action at the Iorio Gymnasium on Friday evening. With the victory the Fighting Tigers improve to 14-10 overall on the season and move within one victory of the NEAC North Division Championship with a 12-4 record in league action while The Express falls to 7-17 overall on the campaign including a 7-9 mark in league play.

The Fighting Tigers made use of their deep roster and fresh legs to wear down the hard charging Express with four players reaching double figures in scoring while 10 players scored in the contest. Cobleskill also continued their efficient offensive play in the victory shooting 48.0% from the field, 24-for-50, 50.0% from three-point range, 3-for-6, and 70.8% from the free throw line, 34-for-48, on the evening.

Senior Alexis Nunez, White Plains, N.Y., White Plains High School, scored a team high 15 points to go with three rebounds and three assists on the evening with senior forward Cortrell King, Brentwood, N.Y., Upper Christina Reading Room High School/Suffolk Community College, adding 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots on the night.

Additionally, Cobleskill received strong play from junior forward Travis Woods, Mount Upton, N.Y., Unatego High School, who scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds and from senior forward Mike Chapman, Brooklyn, N.Y., School, for Democracy & Leadership, who had 11 points to go with six rebounds.  Senior swingman Mike Marcelin, Dix Hills, N.Y., Half Hallows East High School/Suffolk Community College, came off the bench to help the Orange & Black to the win with nine points and four rebounds in a reserve role.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday February 21 when they face NEAC rival Keuka College beginning at 3:00 p.m. with the winner claiming the; 2014-15 NEAC North Division Championship and advancing directly to the league's championship tournament semifinals to be hosted by Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday February 28 and Sunday March 1.
