Bryn Athyn, Pa.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team used an impressive second half to outdistance North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Bryn Athyn College on the Lions home court on Saturday afternoon by a 64-47 margin in league action. The road victory improves the Fighting Tigers overall record to 10-9 including an 8-3 mark in NEAC play while the Lions fall to 5-14 overall with a 5-7 conference record.
After leading 18-9 in the first half, Cobleskill went into the break trailing 26-25 as the home team capitalized on some poor Fighting Tiger defense to reach the free throw line nine times over the last six minutes of the half converting on eight of those opportunities to outscore the visitors 17-to-7 to close the half on top.
In the second half the Fighting Tigers came alive on both ends of the court shooting a sizzling 66.7% from the field, converting on 14-of-21 attempts, while making 10-of-15 free throw attempts, 66.7%, to put the game out of reach. The Cobleskill defense was impressive during the half as well forcing eight turnovers during the stanza while limiting the Lions to only 5-of-20, 25.0%, shooting from the field including a paltry 1-of-12, 8.3%, from three-point range.
Senior forward
Cortrell King, Brentwood, N.Y., Upper Room Christian High School/Suffolk Community College, came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 16 points to go with six rebounds and a blocked shot while senior guard
Alexis Nunez, White Plains, N.Y., White Plains High School, posted a fine all-around effort with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals in the win.
The Cobleskill starting front line continued their strong play with junior center
Travis Woods, Mount Upton, N.Y., Unatego High School, scoring 12 points and taking down three rebounds and with senior forward
Mike Chapman, Brooklyn, N.Y., The School For Democracy & Leadership, scoring eight points, grabbing nine rebound rebounds, recording three steals and passing out a pair of assists in the contest.
The Fighting Tigers will close out their road trip on Sunday February 8 when they travel to Abington, Pa. to meet the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington in NEAC action beginning at 3:00 p.m. Â Â Â
