Buena Vista, Va.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's lacrosse team let one slip away on Wednesday evening as the Fighting Tigers dropped an 11-10 road decision to host Southern Virginia University in non-conference action. The loss drops the Cobleskill to 2-2 overall on the season while the Knights break into the win column on the year improving with the victory to 1-7 overall.
The Fighting Tigers came out of the box slowly falling behind 4-1 at the end of the first period. However in the second stanza the Cobleskill attack found its legs and posted four goals in the frame to trail 7-5 at half time.
In the second half Cobleskill dominated the action throughout the early going tying the game at 7-7 with 3:54 to play in the third period on an unassisted goal by junior attackman
Alex Acompora, Harrison, N.Y., Harrison High School. The Orange & Black then scored three unanswered fourth period goals to take a 10-7 lead on goals by junior midfielder
Troy Rossi, Neversink, N.Y., Tri-Valley High School, freshman attackman
Logan Carsten, Chesterfield, N.Y., Keene High School, and
Alex Acompora and with 4:02 remaining in regulation looked to be in control of the action.
However the host Knights then staged a furious comeback scoring four unanswered goals on a series of Fighting Tiger defensive miscues eventually taking the lead with 1:51 left to play when freshman attackman Sean Peterson, Sandy, Utah, Alta High School, scored the eventual game winner on a pass form sophomore attackman Casey Rich, Buffalo, N.Y., Amherst High School, to give the home team the win.
The Fighting Tigers displayed a balanced offense in the contest with
Alex Acompora scoring twice,
Troy Rossi scoring twice with one assist and
Logan Carsten finding the back of the net twice to go with one assist. Cobleskill also received two goals and an assist from sophomore midfielder
David Meyers, Manorville, N.Y., Eastport-South Manor High School, and two goals form midfielder
Anthony Yevoli, Amsterdam, N.Y., Amsterdam High School.
Senior goalie
Eric Randazzo, Tully, N.Y., Tully High School, despite picking up the loss in net, recorded 10 saves, including several point blank saves, while picking up six ground balls.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Wednesday March 25 when they travel to La Plume, Pa. to face the Giants of Keystone College in non-conference action beginning at 4:00 p.m.
