Fighting Tigers Softball Sweeps Morrisville State to Open NEAC Play

Erin Wadsworth & Morgan Nichols Overpower Mustangs in NEAC Doubleheader Action

Queensbury, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team opened their 2015 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) season using power hitting and power pitching to sweep North Division rival Morrisville State College by scores of 13-1 and 5-0 in a doubleheader played at the Adirondack Sports Complex due to field conditions in Morrisville, N.Y. With the wins the Fighting Tigers improve to 5-1 on the year and open league action with a 2-0 record while the Mustangs fall to 3-7 overall including a 0-2 NEAC record.

Leading 3-0 in the opener going into the top of the fourth inning; the Fighting Tigers exploded for 10 runs to put the game out of reach led by freshman shortstop Angela Fix, Livingston, N.Y., Germantown High School, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI including her first career home run.

Cobleskill also received strong outings from junior catcher Madeline DeMilio, Valhalla, N.Y., Valhalla High School, who was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI and from freshman second baseman Jamie Lord, Mechanicville, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, who was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Junior pitcher Erin Wadsworth, Valatie, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, mowed down the Mustang hitters with an explosive fastball striking out nine and walking only one while allowing only one hit in five innings of work to record the victory. Wadsworth was also a factor at the plate going 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Orange & Black.

In the nightcap, freshman pitcher Morgan Nichols, Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee High School, was the story as the rookie hurler pitched a three-hit shutout striking out four and walking no one in seven innings. Nichols also provided the bulk of the Fighting Tigers offense going 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and three RBI on the afternoon.

Sophomore right fielder Erika Gogis, Pattersonville, N.Y., Schalmont High School, was also an offensive factor in the game going 2-for-4 with a run scored while Erin Wadsworth operating at first base went 1-for-4 with a RBI in the win.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Friday April 3 when they travel to Marcy, N.Y. to face the Wildcats of SUNY Polytechnic for a pair of NEAC games beginning at 3:00 p.m.
