Fighting Tigers Softball Downs SUNY Purchase Panthers 17-9 in Non-Conference Play

Jessica Massi Slugs Three-Run Pinch Hit Home Run in Non-League Fighting Tigers Win


Briarcliff, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon as the Fighting Tigers deployed some impressive offensive firepower to pound the host Panthers of SUNY Purchase 17-9 in non-league action in a game played at Pace University. The six inning victory improves the Fighting Tigers to 6-1 overall on the season while the Panthers fall to 4-8 overall. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out after one inning of play with no plans as to a make-up known at this time.

The Fighting Tigers led 10-7 after three innings of play as both teams showed early offense. However the Cobleskill bats continued their up-tempo attack with produced 14 hits and 10 walks in the contest topped off by a three-run pinch hit homer by junior Jessica Massi, Auburn, N.Y., Port Byron High School, in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Junior catcher Madeline DeMilio, Valhalla, N.Y., Valhalla High School, returned to her home  county in style going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBI with senior third baseman Julia Lull, St. Johnsville, N.Y., St. Johnsville High School, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two stolen bases, two runs scored and three RBI on the afternoon.

The Fighting Tigers also received multi-hit efforts from sophomore right fielder Erika Gogis, Pattersonville, N.Y., Schalmont High School, who was 2-for-2 with a stolen base, two runs scored and a RBI and from freshman shortstop Angela Fix, Livingston, N.Y., Germantown High School, who went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a RBI on the afternoon.

Senior right hander Brianne Gray, Hornell, N.Y., Hornell High School, pitched three innings to get the victory while junior Erin Wadsworth, Valatie, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, worked three innings allowing only one earned run while striking out five and walking two to record her first save of the year.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Wednesday April 8 when they travel to Troy, N.Y., to face the Gators of Sage College in non-conference play beginning at 3:30 p.m.
