Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team opened the 2015 campaign in exciting fashion at the Iorio Gymnasium on Tuesday evening coming from behind to post a dramatic 3-2 decision over the visiting Spartans of Castleton State University by scores of: 12-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-8 and 15-12 in non-league action. With the decision the Fighting Tigers open the campaign with a 1-0 mark while the Spartans start the year off at 0-1.
Trailing 0-2 the Orange & Black rallied from a 7-6 deficit in the third set to grind down the Spartan then played their best volleyball of the night in the third set to post an impressive 25-8 victory. The Fighting Tigers then took a 14-9 lead in the final set and proceeded to hold on for the win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
Cobleskill was led by the tandem of senior outside hitter
Raven Worthing, Tioga, N.Y., Owego High School, who had eight kills, 15 digs and four service aces on the evening and sophomore middle hitter
Bailie Roberts, Fort Edward, N.Y., Fort Edward High School, who chipped in eight kills and three solo blocks on the night. Cobleskill also received a strong initial outing from freshman middle hitter
Emilie Reimer, Mattituck, N.Y., Mattituck High School, who had seven kills, five digs, five solo blocks and two service aces in her first college contest.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Friday September 4
th and Saturday September 5
th when they travel to Chicopee, Mass. for the 2015 Elms College Invitational. On Friday evening Cobleskill will meet the Gators of Sage College at 7:00 p.m. to open the event then play the host Blazers of Elms College on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. before closing out the tournament versus the Owls of Westfield State College at 12:00 p.m.
