Fighting Tigers End 31-Game Losing Streak With Victory Over Southern Vermont

Manchester, Vt.: With their 2-1 non-conference road win over the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College on Saturday evening at Applejack Stadium the SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team ended a 31-game losing streak which began at Penn State Abington on Sunday September 14th of 2014 and spanned almost two years. With the win the Fighting Tigers even their 2016 overall record to 1-1 on the year while Southern Vermont falls to 1-1 for the campaign.

Cobleskill drew first blood in the game's 19th minute of the first half when freshman forward Emile Vwaza, Manhattan, N.Y., Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School, made a pin point cross to freshman forward Mouhammad Diop, Manhattan, N.Y., Julia Richmond High School, who redirected it to the back of the home team's net to give the visitors the lead.

The Fighting Tigers then tallied the eventual game winner in the 30th minute of play when Vwaza found freshman midfielder Mame Amar, Manhattan, N.Y., Liberty High School, breaking for the net with a beautifully placed thru ball which the rookie promptly blasted home for the game winning goal.

Junior goalkeeper Dan Burger, Ellenburg, N.Y., Germantown High School, then made the lead stand up as the game turned into a defensive battle which saw the Fighting Tiger veteran make six saves to preserve the lead, record the win and end the streak.

The Orange & Black will return to the field on Saturday September 10th when they travel to Cazenovia, N.Y., to face the Wildcats of Cazenovia College at 3:00 p.m. in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener for both teams.
