Chicopee, Mass.: After dispatching Blazer Invitational Tournament hosts Elm College on Friday evening in the event's opening round, the SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team continued their winning ways on Saturday by defeating Albertus Magnus College 3-2 by set scores 25-20 24-26, 16-25, 25-23 and 15-9 and York College of New York 3-1 by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-23 to claim the tournament title. With the wins the Fighting Tigers improve to 3-0 overall on the season.
"I thought keys to our success this weekend were that we hustled, played together as a team and competed for every point," said Head Coach
Scott Hill. "Last year we had a tendency to stand around and let things happen to us whereas this weekend we were aggressive and forced the action. This is a great way to start but now we have to build upon this success."
Three Fighting Tiger team members received recognition for their outstanding play over the weekend. Sophomore middle hitter
Emilie Reimer, Mattituck, N.Y., Mattituck High School, was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 2.44 kills and 3.33 digs per set at the event. Additionally a pair of Fighting Tigers were named to the All-Tournament Team as freshman outside hitter
Brittany Boyce, Rotterdam, N.Y., Mohonasen High School, who averaged 2.22 kills and 2.44 digs per set and sophomore setter
Mackenzie Holbert, Sauquoit, N.Y., Sauquoit High School, Herkimer Community College, who averaged 7.3 assists and 1.3 digs per set were honored for their play over the weekend.
Cobleskill will next be in action on Wednesday September 7
th when they host the Hawks of Hartwick College in non-league action at the Iorio Gymnasium with first serve at 7:00 p.m. Â
