Rochester, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team dropped a hard fought 80-77 decision to Oberlin College, from Oberlin, Ohio, in the opening round of the 33
rd Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Saturday evening. With the defeat the Fighting Tigers fall to 2-2 overall on the season while the Yeomen improve to 3-1 overall on the campaign.
After leading by as many as 10 points in the second half the Fighting Tigers saw their lead evaporate and actually trailed 77-72 with 19 seconds left when senior
Joel Costello, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School/Tompkins-Cortland Community College, converted from three-point range to cut the lead to 77-75.
After a Cobleskill, time-out Oberlin go the ball over half court into the hands of junior guard, Nile Godfrey, South Orange, N.J., Seton Hall Prep, who split a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to play to make it 78-75 missing the second attempt of the pair. Cobleskill then advanced the rebound up-court and took a time-out with seven seconds left in regulation.
Off the ensuing inbound, senior point guard
Malik Chambers, West Point, N.Y., James I. O'Neil High School, found senior forward
Christian Cooper, Gilboa, N.Y., Gilboa-Conesville High School, wide open to hit an apparent game tying three-point field goal with only three seconds left in regulation.
However upon the officials reviewing the basket, it was called a two-pointer and the Orange & Black trailed 78-77. From there the Yeomen converted a pair of free throws to secure the victory at 80-77.
Joel Costello once again led Cobleskill in scoring with 21 points to go with four assists on the night while freshman forward
Antwan Claxton, Bronx, N.Y., Taft High School, came off the bench to score 14 points and grab six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Devin Boyle, Johnstown, N.Y., Johnstown High School, was also a factor off the bench with 10 points and three rebounds with
Malik Chambers posting a strong all-around floor game for the Orange & Black contributing seven points, six assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Sunday at the Harold J. Brodie Tournament in the event's consolation round at 1:00 p.m. versus the loser of tonight's game between D'Youville College and RIT.
