Men's Soccer Battles League Leading Penn State Abington to 2-2 Tie in Double OT

Fighting Tigers Tie League Leaders to Improve NEAC Play-off Position

Oneonta, N.Y.:   The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team posted a decision that could have major impact on North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play-off picture on Sunday as the Fighting Tigers tied the unbeaten conference leading Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington on Sunday on the turf at SUNY Oneonta 2-2 in double overtime. With the tie the Fighting Tigers improve to 8-8-1 overall including a 5-3-1 record in NEAC action while the Nittany Lions are now 11-4-1 overall including a 9-0-1 record in league play.

Cobleskill opened the scoring in the fourth minute of play when junior forward Khadim Diba, Manhattan, N.Y., Julia Richmond High School, blasted home a loose ball rolling in front of the Nittany Lions goal to make it 1-0 Fighting Tigers. The visitors tied the score in the 38th minute on a mirror image of the Cobleskill goal when junior defender Dmitri Bourlako, Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Lower Moreland High School, cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Cobleskill goal to send the game into half time tied at 1-1.

In the second half the Nittany Lions took a 2-1 advantage when sophomore forward Jose Palomeque, Upper Dublin, Pa., Upper Dublin High School, broke through the Cobleskill defense hitting a chip over freshman goalie Garrett Maxwell, Enfield, N.Y., Suffield High School, in the 59th minute.

However the Orange & Black would not be denied as junior midfielder Mame Amar, Manhattan, N.Y., Liberty High School, stole the ball away from a Nittany Lion player and executed a perfect 2-on-1 situation with Khadim Diba which led to a well-placed pass to the weakside of Abington freshman goalkeeper Esteban Leon, Miami, Fla, Terra Environmental High School, and an easy score at the 65th minute of play.

Over the course of the next 25 minutes of regulation and two 10 minute overtimes a hard hitting battle ensued with each team having offensive chances only to be stopped by superior goalkeeping by Leon and Maxwell as each keeper made spectacular saves in regulation and overtime to preserve the tie. With Leon finishing with seven saves for the Nittany Lions and Maxwell stopping six shots for Cobleskill.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday, October 27th when they travel to Aurora, N.Y. when meet The Express of Wells College for a 3:00 p.m. kick-off.
