Aurora, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team opened their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) season on Saturday afternoon out battling the host Express of Wells College 60-58 in league action. With the win the Fighting Tigers move to 5-2 overall including a 1-0 mark in league play while Wells falls to 0-7 with a 0-1 record in NEAC action.
Trailing 46-40 to the upset minded Express at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Fighting Tigers outscored Wells 20-12 to wrestle the victory away from the home team despite only connecting on 19-of-64, 27.9%, shots from the field. Cobleskill made up for the lack of offense with by winning the battle of the boards by a 45-to-38 margin and by forcing The Express into 14 turnovers on the afternoon.
With the score tied at 57-57 with 1:36 remaining in regulation the Fighting Tigers took the lead for good when junior center/forward
Stacey Sprague, Grand Gorge, N.Y., Roxbury High School, split a pair for free throws to give Cobleskill a 58-57 seven advantage with 1:33 remaining. Junior guard
Addy Lawson, Milford, N.Y., Milford High School, and sophomore guard/forward
Monique Britton, Westerlo, N.Y., Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, each contributed a free throw down the stretch to preserve the road win for the visitors.
Lawson was once again the driving force behind the Cobleskill attack as the talented junior scored a team high of 18 points to go with seven rebounds, six steals and three assists on the afternoon. The Fighting Tigers also did damage to the Express on the inside as
Stacey Sprague netted 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds while junior
Gabby Muraczewski, Hamilton Square, N.J., Southern Regional High School, added 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Orange & Black will next be in action on Tuesday December 4
th when they host NEAC rival SUNY Polytechnic Institute in conference play with tip-off at 5:00 p.m.
