Cazenovia, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team ended their weekend road trip to western and central New York on Sunday falling to the host Wildcats of Cazenovia College by a 3-2 margin in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play. With the loss the Fighting Tigers blank to 4-4 overall on the season including a 1-2 record in league play while the host Wildcats move to 7-1 overall including a 2-1 record versus NEAC opponents.
In what could statistically strange looking contest, the Fighting Tiger offense struggled to put pressure on the opposition as the Wildcats held advantages of 32-to-4 in shots, 16-to-2 in shots-on-goal and 8-1 in corner kicks on the afternoon to dominate time of possession throughout the game.
However Cobleskill proved to be opportunistic in taking advantage of opportunities during the second half when trailing 3-0 freshman midfielder Rebecca Bruno, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School, converted on a penalty kick to make the score 3-1 in the 69
th minute of play.
The Fighting Tigers then struck in the 84
th minute of action when junior
Addy Lawson, Milford, N.Y., Milford High School, broke through the Wildcat defense and found the back of the Cazenovia net.
However, that was as close as the visitors could come as the Cazenovia defense stiffened and the home team's offense controlled the tempo down the stretch.
Freshman goalkeeper
Abigail Wetsel, Schoharie, N.Y., Schoharie High School, notched 13 saves on the afternoon to keep Cobleskill in the contest overcoming a pair of defensive breakdowns that led to Wildcat scores earlier. Â
The Orange & Black will next be in action on Saturday September 29
th when they travel to Williamstown, Pa. for an NEAC meeting with the Wildcats of Penn College with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
