North Adams, Mass.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team made their initial road trip of the season on Tuesday evening losing a hard fought 53-52 decision the Trailblazers of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in non-conference action. With the defeat the Fighting Tigers drop to 1-1 overall on the year while MCLA currently boasts a 1-1 overall mark.
On a night where team shooting percentages mirrored the cold Massachusetts weather, Cobleskill connecting on 21-for-68, 30.9%, from the field and MCLA hitting on 16-of-58, 27.6%, turning the game into a possession for possession defense struggle which included 10 ties and 15 lead changes.
The Fighting Tigers found themselves trailing 53-47 with only 53 seconds left in regulation when junior guard
Nylasia Sutton, Queens, N.Y., Lansingburgh High School/Herkimer Community College, scored from three-point range to make it 53-50 with 49 seconds left in regulation. Cobleskill then took advantage of a pair of missed Trailblazer free throws to push the ball up the court with Sutton taking it coast-to-cost for a lay-up making it 53-52 with 35 seconds left.
Coming out of a timeout called by the home team, the Fighting Tigers defense stymied a pair of MCLA shot attempts to regain possession with only 17 seconds remaining in the contest.
However the visitors could not convert on a pair of out of bounds opportunities as a final jump hook effort in the paint by freshman forward
Anna Post, Bovina Center, N.Y., Delaware Academy, rimming out long and out of play as time expired.
Individually for the visitors,
Anna Post came off the bench to lead the Orange & Black in scoring with a team high of 13 points to go with eight rebounds while
Nylasia Sutton had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals on the night. Senior center
Gabby Muraczewski, Hamilton Square, N.J., Southern Regional High School, also turned in a solid for the Fighting Tigers with seven points, 12 rebounds and a blocked shot on the night.
Cobleskill will return to action over the weekend when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. the 2019 Mike Daley Memorial Tournament hosted by Nazareth College on Saturday November 16
th and Sunday November 17
th at Nazareth's Kidera Gymnasium. The Fighting Tigers will open the event by meeting the host Golden Flyers at 5:00 p.m. then meet depending on the outcome will meet the winner or loser of the Buffalo State University versus Hilbert College game on Sunday at either 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.
