SUNY Cobleskill Softball Sweeps Visiting Gallaudet University Bison in NEAC Action

Fighting Tiger Softball Feasts on Bison Pitching in NEAC Sweep


Cobleskill, N.Y.: In an effort to beat potentially wet weather on Sunday; the SUNY Cobleskill softball team hosted the Bison of Gallaudet University on Friday afternoon for a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games at Fighting Tiger Park. When the dust cleared on the day's action; Fighting Tigers had feasted on Bison pitching to sweep the doubleheader, by scores of 10-2 and 12-6.With the wins the Fighting Tigers improve to 9-11 overall including a 6-4 mark in NEAC action and the Bison now checking in with a 10-14 overall record including a 2-8 mark in conference play.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers broke a 1-1 tie by scoring five runs in the bottom of the second and four runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away pounding out 12 hits while drawing five walks off Bison pitchers.

Freshman second baseman Alyssa Villielm, Rifton, N.Y., Kingston High School, led the way from the lead-off spot going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while freshman center fielder Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, went 2-for-4 with a stolen base along with a pair of RBI and sophomore pitcher Rachel Hall, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, helped her own cause by going 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Cobleskill also received strong offensive efforts from junior left fielder Quesha Sells, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, who was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, three runs scored and a RBI and from freshman shortstop Megan Gilligan, East Chatham, N.Y., Chatham High School, who was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, two runs scored and two RBI.

In the circle, left-hander Rachel Hall controlled the Bison offense for the most part allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out four while walking only one to record the victory.
The Fighting Tigers open the second game with early offense as second baseman Alyssa Villielm led the game off with her third home run of the season as the Orange & Black led 10-0 after three innings and never looked back once again recording 12 hits to go with six walks versus Gallaudet pitching.

Villielm and Nitchman continued to lead the way at the plate for the home team with Villielm going 2-for-3 with a homer, a stolen base two runs scored and two RBI and Nitchman going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman pitcher Arielle Kranbuhl, Boonville, N.Y., Adirondack High School, was also a factor offensively going 2-for-4 with her first career home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

On the mound, Kranbuhl struck out nine hitters while walking no one to improve her record to 3-2 overall on the year.

SUNY Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday April 13th when they meet the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington for a NEAC doubleheader at Fighting Tiger Park beginning at 1:00 p.m.
