Schenectady, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team closed out the non-conference portion of their 2019 schedule on Thursday afternoon dropping a doubleheader to the Dutchwomen of Union College by scores of 8-3 and 12-1 at Union's Alexander Field. With the defeats the Fighting Tigers fall to 14-14 on the year while Union improves to 15-16 overall on the season.
In the first game, the Fighting Tigers stuck first scoring in the first inning before the Dutchwomen scored the tallied the next eight runs to put the contest out of reach as the home team rapped out 11 hits including a pair of home runs.
The Orange & Black received offensive contributions from freshman second baseman
Alyssa Villielm, Rifton, N.Y., Kingston High School, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and a RBI and from freshman shortstop
Megan Gilligan, East Chatham, N.Y., Chatham High School, who was 1-for-3 with a home run and a RBI.
In the nightcap the visiting Fighting Tigers once again struck first as junior left fielder
Quesha Sells, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, beat out a bunt single then scored on a single on a hit-and-run play off the bat of freshman center fielder
Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, to give Cobleskill a 1-0 lead.
However those were the only two hits the Cobleskill offense could muster against Dutchwomen pitching for the afternoon.
The rest of the contest the Union offense then took over; scoring 12 runs on 13 hits to post the home victory.
Cobleskill close the regular season on Saturday April 27
th when they host North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival SUNY Polytechnic Institute at Fighting Tiger Park for a pair of games beginning at 1:00 p.m. then await word on the 2019 NEAC Championship Tournament seedings.
