Fighting Tiger Volleyball Downs Utica College 3-1 in Non-League Contest

Cobleskill Women's Volleyball Rides Defense to Victory Over Utica College


Utica, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team returned to the road on Wednesday evening to record a 3-1 victory over the host Pioneers of Utica College in non-league action by set scores of: 25-20, 25-16, 17-25 and 25-22. With the win the Fighting Tigers even their overall record at 6-6 on the year while the Pioneers fall to 2-14 overall on the campaign. The Cobleskill win also ended an eight match losing streak to Utica which dated back to October 8th of 2013.

The Fighting Tiger defense was the key to the win as the visitors racked up 105 digs and 14 total blocks on the evening. Led by the libero tandem of junior defensive specialist Megan Gass, West Monroe, N.Y., Central Square High School/Finger Lakes Community College, who racked up 20 digs, an assist and a service ace on the night and senior libero Mikayla Catherman, Marcellus, N.Y., Marcellus High School, who had a game high 23 digs to go along with two assists and two service aces.

At the net Cobleskill sophomore middle hitter Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, had a team high nine kills to go with four digs and three total blocks while junior middle hitter Rachel Burke, West Winfield, N.Y., Mt. Markham High School, added eight kills and a career best 10 total blocks on the night.

Junior setter Maleigha Ellithorpe, Cazenovia, N.Y., Cazenovia High School, once again quarterbacked the offensive attack to perfection with 29 assists, 12 digs, four kills and a pair of service aces with senior right side hitter Regan Hubner, Miller Place, N.Y., Rocky Point High School, adding eight kills, 14 digs, three assists, two total blocks and a service ace to the team's victory totals.  

The Orange & Black will next be in action on Saturday September 28th when they host The Express from Wells College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
