Aurora, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team defeated the Express of Wells College by a 62-32 margin in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action. With the victory the Fighting Tigers move to 8-6 overall including a 3-2 record in NEAC play while Wells is 0-14 overall and 0-5 in the NEAC.
The Fighting Tigers jumped out to a 12-7 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back. Cobleskill flexed their defensive muscles as they allowed Wells to only score 32 points in the game and 21.3% shooting from the field. Their defensive pressure forced the hosts into 26 turnovers which resulted into 17 steals for the visitors. The Tigers held an 48-37 rebound advantage over the Express as well as and dishing out 18 assists.
Cobleskill shot 35.8% from the field and 56.3% from the charity stripe. The bench provided a spark for the Tigers by scoring 24 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
The Tigers were led by sophomore
TyLysa Martinez (Coram, N.Y./ Longwood) as she posted a double/double of 20 points and 11 rebounds to go with 3 steals and 3 assists. Junior
Nylasia Sutton (Queens, N.Y./ Lansingburgh) was a factor in the win for the Tigers with her all around play of 7 points, 8 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds.
A major reason for their defensive success was senior
Erica Cabrera (Middletown, N.Y./ Burke Catholic) who set the tone with 5 steals in the game to go along with 7 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman
Lydia Chittenden (Schodack Landing, N.Y./ Maple Hill) gave the Tigers a lift from the bench by scoring 11 points and bringing down 3 rebounds.
The Orange & Black will return to league play on Wednesday, January 22
nd when they host SUNY Poly at 7 pm in the Iorio Gymnasium.
