SUNY Cobleskill Baseball Sweeps MCLA 9-7 and 11-0 in Non-League Action

Thomas and Lewis Lead Fighting Tigers to Sweep on Saturday Afternoon


Yaphank, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team continued their winning was on Saturday as the Fighting Tigers swept the Trailblazers of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) by scores of 9-7 and 11-0 in a pair of games played at the Baseball Heaven Complex. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers improved to 5-1 overall while the Trailblazers fell to 0-2 overall on the year.

In the opener the Cobleskill bats erupted for six runs in the second inning to give them the lead for good as the Fighting Tiger offense once again scored nine runs pounding out nine hits while drawing three walks on the afternoon.

Junior first baseman Nick Thomas, Scotia, N.Y., Scotia-Glenville High School/Hudson Valley Community College, started things off for the Orange & Black with a first inning home run going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI on the afternoon with junior center fielder Eddie Garcia, Bronx, N.Y. Word View Academy, going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI and Junior left fielder Jayson Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., West Canada High School, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Cobleskill also received a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of RBI from sophomore catcher Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All Hallows High School, while junior third baseman Chris Kordziel, Rotterdam, N.Y., Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons/Hudson Valley Community College, finished 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Junior right hander Jarrod Williams, Baldwinsville, N.Y., C.W. Baker High School/Finger Lakes Community College, picked up the wins going four innings allowing four earned runs to even his overall record at 1-1 with relief help form Kristopher Buhlman, Williamson, N.Y., Williamson High School, who worked  a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first save of the year.

In the nightcap junior lefty Devin Lewis, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, dominated the Trailblazers going the distance pitching seven scoreless innings allowing only one hit, striking out seven and walking only one to improve to 2-0 overall on the season.

 Center fielder Eddie Garcia blasted a two-run homer in the first inning to get the Fighting Tigers off and running going 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored while first baseman Nick Thomas was a perfect 3-for-3 with  a home run three runs scored and four RBI.  Third baseman Chris Kordziel continued his strong play going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

The Fighting Tigers will close the weekend road trip with a pair of games versus the Trailblazers at the Baseball/Haven Complex in Yaphank, N.Y. scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
