Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team opened their long awaited 2021 campaign on Thursday evening by posting a hard-fought victory over visiting North Atlantic Conference Western Division rival SUNY Canton by a 69-67 margin. With the victory the Fighting Tigers open their pandemic shortened season schedule with a 1-0 record while the Kangaroos open at 0-1.
Cobleskill was impressive in the first half holding a 40-25 advantage at the break before the Kangaroos staged a furious comeback to tie the contest at 65-65 with 2:25 remaining in regulation.
Down the stretch the Orange & Black turned in a strong defensive effort allowing only a pair of free throws while forcing the visitors into a pair of missed three-point opportunities and two turnovers while converting on four-of-six free throws to secure the victory.
Sophomore forward
Anna Post, Bovina Center, N.Y., Delaware Academy, led the way for the home team with 15 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore guard
Inasia Barham, Mount Vernon, N.Y., Monsignor Scanlan & Francis Lewis High School, added 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals on the evening.
Cobleskill also received 10 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots from freshman center
Jordan Finch, East Meredith, N.Y., South Kortright High School, while junior guard/forward
TyLysa Martinez, Coram, N.Y., Longwood High School, chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals on the night.
Due to COVID-19 required scheduling rules, the Fighting Tigers will travel to Canton, N.Y. tomorrow evening, March 19, to close out their season series with the Kangaroos with tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
