Cortland, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team took to the road on Wednesday afternoon to open the 2021 campaign by dropping a pair of road games to regional power SUNY Cortland by scores of 15-2 and 2-0 in non-conference action. With the blank the Fighting Tigers open the year at 0-2 while the Red Dragons are now 2-0 on the season.
In the first game, the Fighting Tigers jumped on the home team early scoring a pair of first inning runs to take an early 2-0 advantage before Cortland scored the game's next 15 tallies to decide the issue.
Cobleskill center fielder
Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, went 2-for-2 in the opener with a double, a run scored and a stolen base while junior
Maya Davies, Binghamton, N.Y., Chenango Valley High School/Onondaga Community College, was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, Fighting Tiger sophomore right hander
Victoria Decker, Stone Ridge, N.Y., Rondout Valley High School, turned in a stellar effort in defeat holding the hard-hitting Red Dragon Offense to two earned runs on nine hits over six innings of work.
Offensively Cobleskill managed only three singles in the contest as sophomore third baseman
Emma Duarte, Dighton, Mass., Bristol County Agricultural High School, freshman catcher
Emily Lutz, Ellenville, N.Y., Ellenville High School, and senior shortstop
Megan Gilligan, East Chatham, N.Y., Chatham High School, each went 1-for-2 in the game. Â
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday March 27 when they host the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz at Fighting Tiger Park for a pair of games beginning at 1:00 p.m. Due to pandemic restrictions no spectators will be allowed to attend the contest
