Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contests on Saturday to Western Division rival SUNY Polytechnic Institute losing the first game 7-4 in nine innings then taking game two by a score of 5-1. With the split the Fighting Tigers move to 5-2 overall including a 3-1 mark in conference action while the Wildcats are now 1-4 overall with a 1-3 record in NAC play.
In the opener Cobleskill jumped out to a first inning 1-0 lead when senior centerfielder
Nick Thomas, Scotia, N.Y., Scotia-Glenville High School, homered to dead center field. Cobleskill then scored three runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0.
However, a series of late Fighting Tiger defensive lapses helped the Wildcats to tie the contest in the seventh inning when a dropped third strike was subsequently thrown into right field and allowed the Wildcats to score a pair of runs to tie the contest at 4-4 and force extra innings.
Senior right hander
Jarrod Williams, Baldwinsville, N.Y., C.W. Baker High School/Finger Lakes Community College, received a hard-luck no decision allowing only one earned run in seven innings striking out 10 while walking only one while sophomore reliever Christopher Leavey, Kings Park, N.Y., Kings Park High School, suffered the loss as three Cobleskill errors led to the Wildcats pushing across three runs to secure the win and end the Orange & Black's four-game winning streak.
In the nightcap, senior southpaw
Devin Lewis, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, went six innings allowing one earned run while striking out five and walking no one to post his second win of the season.
The home team struck for three runs in the first inning as centerfielder
Nick Thomas blasted a solo home run followed up by a double by junior shortstop
Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, and a two-run home run by senior left fielder
Jayson Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., Notre Dame High School.
The Fighting Tigers then scored a pair of runs in the second inning when sophomore second baseman
Connor Mann, Hampstead, Md., Hereford High School, singled, advanced to third on a double by
Nick Thomas followed by a two-run single by
Eddy Garcia which staked Cobleskill to a 5-0 lead from which they never looked back.
Cobleskill will next be in action this week when they will host SUNY Canton for a mid-week NAC doubleheader with date and starting time to be announced.
