Fighting Tiger Baseball Defeats SUNY Canton in NAC Doubleheader

Cobleskill Pitchers Lead Way to Sweep Over SUNY Canton in NAC Action

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's baseball team used strong pitching and timely hitting to sweep the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action by scores of 4-1 and 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Fighting Tiger Field. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers move to 7-2 overall on the year including a 5-1 record in conference play while the Kangaroos drop to 3-7 overall with a 1-3 record in league action.

In the first game with Cobleskill leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs; senior left fielder Jayson Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., Notre Dame High School, belted a two-run home run to drive in freshman catcher Matthew Snyder, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, who had singled to give the team a 4-1 lead.

From there the Fighting Tiger pitching staff closed the door as freshman right-hander Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction, earned the victory by going 6 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on five hits, striking out five while walking only one with relief help from junior fireman Manielvic Diplan, Peekskill N.Y., Peekskill/Monroe College, who earned the save by striking out the only hitter he faced with runners on first and second.

At the plate, the home team received strong efforts from Jayson Maxwell who was 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBI and Matthew Snyder who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Senior shortstop Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, was also a factor offensively for the Orange & Black going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

In the nightcap the Fighting Tiger pitching staff continued to stifle the Kangaroos as four Cobleskill hurlers held the visitors to only one earned run on seven hits while striking out three and walking only one in the win which was credited to freshman Andrew Jarkow, Glen Head, N.Y., North Shore High School, who pitched two innings of relief allowing only one unearned run.

On offense the home team was led by sophomore second baseman Connor Mann, Hampstead, Md., Hereford High School, who was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI, junior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Bayside, N.Y. /Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, who was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI and senior first baseman Jarrod Williams, Baldwinsville, N.Y., C.W. Baker High School/Finger Lakes Community College, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Cobleskill will next travel to Canton, N.Y. over the weekend for a pair of NAC doubleheaders versus the Kangaroos beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and a tentative start of 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
