Fighting Tiger Softball Splits Non-League Road Doubleheader With Skidmore College

SUNY Cobleskill Splits Road Twinbill with Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Wednesday

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team split a pair of non-conference road games on Wednesday afternoon to the host Thoroughbreds of Liberty League power Skidmore College dropping the opener 9-1 and taking the nightcap 10-4. With the split the Fighting Tigers improve to 2-6 overall on the season to date while the Thoroughbreds move to 12-4 overall on the campaign.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers made five errors which led to seven unearned Skidmore runs that saw the home team tally four times in the first inning and never look back.

At the plate sophomore first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua High School, was exceptional going 3-for-3 with a double while junior catcher Ashley Covert, Castile, N.Y., Letchworth High School, was 1-for-3 with the team's lone run batted in.
In the nightcap Cobleskill trailed 2-0 with two outs in the top of the third inning when third baseman Ashley Covert doubled and first baseman Alexis Miranda singled to put runners on the corners for senior shortstop Maya Davies, Binghamton, N.Y., Chenango Valley High School/Onondaga Community College, who cleared the left center field fence for a three-run homer to give the Fighting Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Cobleskill then broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning when the visitors struck for seven runs courtesy of a pair of Thoroughbred errors, a run scoring single off the batt of Maya Davies and an RBI double by senior left fielder Alyssa Villielm, Kingston, N.Y., Kingston High School, extend their lead to 10-2.

Sophomore right hander Marissa Wheeler, Kinderhook, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, then closed the door on Skidmore for the upset victory going the full seven innings holding the home team to four runs, three earned runs, on four hits, striking out seven and walking five to improve her record to 1-2 overall on the year.

The Orange & Black have postponed their Thursday game versus the Blue Knights of Mount Saint Mary's College until April 20 and are next scheduled to host the Dutchwomen of Union College on Tuesday April 5 at Fighting Tiger Park beginning at 3:00 p.m. unless an opponent can be found for potential weekend action.
