Fighting Tiger Baseball Sweeps SUNY Poly in NAC Play 5-2 & 15-4

Cobleskill Baseball Sweeps Season Series From SUNY Poly

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team returned home on Tuesday afternoon to sweep a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games and the season series from the Wildcats of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) by scores of 5-2 and 15-4 at Fighting Tiger Field. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers are now 13-11 overall on the year including a 5-0 record in NAC action while the Wildcats fall to 2-17 overall on the season with a 0-5 record versus conference opponents.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers took advantage of several Wildcat defensive miscues to push across four unearned runs to secure the victory behind the pitching of senior southpaw Ethan Straub, Oswego, N.Y., Hannibal High School/Jefferson Community College, who went the distance going seven innings allowing two runs on five hits striking out seven while issuing no walks to improve his record to 3-2 on the season.

At the plate Cobleskill received contributions from first year catcher Dylan Pohl, East Meadow, N.Y., East Meadow High School, who went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI, junior first baseman Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All-Hallows High School, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and from senior shortstop Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, who was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

In the nightcap Cobleskill took advantage of 10 Wildcat walked batters to jump out to an 8-0 lead after two innings before posting six runs in the bottom of the third inning when the Fighting Tigers accomplished a program first by hitting four consecutive home runs in the frame.

The historic feat started when shortstop Eddie Garcia belted a three-run homer to left center field, followed by senior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Bayside, N.Y., Bayside High School/Queensborough Community College, who hit a monster blast to right field followed by first baseman Frank Leger clearing the left field wall for a solo homer with the home run parade then being capped off by first year catcher Logan Hutter, Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, who homered to left field.

Eddy Garcia keyed the Fighting Tigers offensive explosion going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four runs scored and four RBI with Samuel Gutierrez going 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Wednesday April 13 when they travel to New Paltz, N.Y. for a non-conference contest versus the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz 4:00 p.m.
