Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's baseball team opened an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) series on Friday afternoon by coming from six runs down to defeat the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton 9-8 in 10 innings at Fighting Tiger Field. With the comeback victory the Fighting Tigers are now 18-11 overall including a NAC Western Division leading 9-0 record versus league opponents while the Kangaroos drop to 8-23 overall with a 5-6 record in league action.
Cobleskill trailed 6-0 after five innings and 8-4 after seven innings before cutting the lead to 8-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The Orange & Black then cut the deficit to 8-7 when with one out first year catcher
Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown West High School, blasted a home run over the left field fence followed by a walk to junior first baseman
Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All Hallows High School, who was then lifted for sophomore pinch runner
Matthew Snyder, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, who advance to third on a single by junior right fielder
Connor Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., West Canada High School, then scored on a wild pitch with junior designated hitter
Anthony Vicinanzo, Amsterdam, N.Y., Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School, at the plate.
After holding the Kangaroos scoreless in the 10
th inning, junior third baseman
David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College, led off the extra frame with a walk and with one out advanced to second on an infield out bringing up senior shortstop
Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, who was intentionally walked by Canton. That then put the game in the hands of the Fighting Tigers clean-up hitter
Samuel Gutierrez, Bayside, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, who ripped the second pitch of the at-bat down the right field line to score Flora and decide the issue. Ā
At the plate,
Samuel Gutierrez posted a 1-for-4 day with a run scored and two RBI while
Logan Hutter finished the day going 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored an RBI to key the Cobleskill comeback.
First year reliever
Aidan Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., West Canada High School, was dominate in relief pitching two scoreless innings to even his record at 2-2 by allowing one hit while striking out five and walking one.
The Fighting Tigers and Kangaroos will close out the conference weekend series on Saturday, April 23, with a doubleheader at Fighting Tiger Field starting at 12:00 p.m.Ā Ā
