Canton, N.Y.: In the start of a series with major implications on the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play-offs, the SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team opened a three-game set on Saturday by defeating the host Kangaroos of SUNY Canton 11-0 in league action. With the shutout win the Fighting Tigers are now 7-13 overall including a 5-1 record versus league opponents while the Kangaroos fall to 7-16 overall with a 3-2 mark in NAC play.
The Fighting Tigers flexed some serious offensive muscle on Saturday pounding out three home runs and three doubles as part of a 16 hit barrage against Kangaroo pitching which led to the victory.
Sophomore first baseman
Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua High School, led the home run parade going 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a stolen base and two runs score with senior center fielder
Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, going 1-for-3 with a solo homer and senior shortstop
Maya Davies, Binghamton, N.Y., Chenango Valley High School/Broome Community College, going 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.
Cobleskill also received strong efforts at the plate from senior
Alyssa Villielm, Rifton, N.Y., Kingston High School, who went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI and from junior designated player
Ashley Covert, Castile, N.Y., Letchworth High School, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Sophomore pitcher
Marissa Wheeler, Kinderhook, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, posted the shutout win allowing only three hits while striking out four and walking only two to even her record at 4-4 overall on the season.
The two teams will close their weekend series on Sunday, April 24, with a doubleheader at Canton beginning at 11:00 a.m.
