Fighting Tiger Women's Soccer Downs Host Wells Express 5-2 in Non-League Play

Ashlynn DeRonda Scores Twice as Cobleskill Women's Soccer Defeats Wells 5-2

Aurora, N.Y.: After two seasons of pandemic related inactivity, the SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team posted their first victory of the 2022 campaign, taking to the road to stop The Express of host Wells College by a 5-2 margin in non-conference action. With the victory the Fighting Tigers even their overall record at 1-1 on the season while Wells falls to 0-1-1 on the year.

Cobleskill struck first in the 15th minute of play when first-year forward Ashlynn DeRonda, Saugerties, N.Y., Saugerties High School, scored the first of her two goals to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

After Wells tied the contest in the 34th minute the Fighting Tigers benefited from a Wells own goal in the 54th minute to give them a 2-1 advantage from which they never looked back as DeRonda the eventual game winner, her second of the day in the 61st minute to make it 3-1.

The celebration of DeRonda's goal had barely settled down when junior midfielder Julia Howard, Elizaville, N.Y., Germantown High School, found the back of the net a mere 14 seconds later to increase the Cobleskill lead to 4-1. Then after The Express cut the lead to 4-2 in the 86th minute sophomore defender Erin Hensel, Niskayuna, N.Y., Niskayuna High School, capped off the road-trip with a tally in the 89th minute to make it 5-2.

The Fighting Tiger defense allowed the home team only three shots on the afternoon as first-year goalkeeper Brianna Rogers, Canton, N.Y., Hugh C. Williams, recorded one save on her way to her first collegiate victory.

The Orange & Black will return home on Saturday September 10th for their home opener versus the Panthers of SUNY Purchase for a non-league contest with kick-off set for 3:00 p.
