Schenectady, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 season in impressive fashion on Wednesday evening downing the host Garnett Chargers of Union College by a 73-66 margin in non-league action. With the victory the Fighting Tigers open the year at 1-0 overall while Union starts off 0-1 to open the campaign.
The Fighting Tigers opened up a 42-28 half time advantage on the strength of three-point shooting and tenacious defense as Cobleskill led wire-to-wire for the victory. On the evening the Orange & Black connected on 9-of-23 three-point attempts (39.1%) while forcing the home team into 16 turnovers on the evening.
Cobleskill was led by junior forward/guard
Cara Walker, Phelps, N.Y., Midlakes High School, who posted a double/double in her first action in Orange & Black with 24 points, 11 rebounds to go with four steals while connecting on 6-of-11 shots from the field including 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point line.
The visitors also received strong outings from junior guard
Annie Canales, North Adams, Mass., Hoosac Valley High School, who hit for 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range, senior center
Logan Thayne, Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Hoosick Falls High School, who scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots and from junior guard
Antonia May, Amsterdam, N.Y., Amsterdam High School, who had eight points and three rebounds.
Sophomore forward/center
Emily Satterday, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, came off the bench to grab 11 rebounds and score five points with junior point guard
Taylor Meacham, Berne, N.Y., Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, scoring four points, passing out six assists and blocking a shot in the victory.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Sunday November 12 when they travel to Danbury, CT for a non-league meeting with the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m.
