Fighting Tiger Softball Drops Non-League Road Doubleheader to Castleton University

Cobleskill Softball Loses Non-Conference Doubleheader to Castleton University Spartans


Castleton, Vt.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team dropped a doubleheader on the road to the host Spartans of Castleton University in non-league play by scores of 10-2 and 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss the Fighting Tigers are now 3-16 overall on the year while the Spartans move to 8-8 overall on the campaign.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers struck first as senior centerfielder Abigail Scheurich, Oxford, Conn, Nonnewaug High School, singled home sophomore pitcher Olivia DeMott, Sidney, N.Y., Sidney High School, who had singled and junior left fielder Emily Lutz, Ellenville, N.Y., Ellenville High School, who had reached on an error to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

However, the Spartans answered with three runs in their half of the first and went on to score eight more times on 11 hits while taking advantage of 13 Cobleskill walks in the game to secure the 10-2 victory.

In the nightcap, Castleton scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back despite a strong relief outing from Fighting Tiger senior pitcher Marissa Wheeler, Kinderhook, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, who worked six strong innings of relief starter sophomore Jaydaci Chamberlain, Northborough, Mass., Norfolk County Agricultural High School. Wheeler allowed one earned run on six hits striking out four.

At the plate the Fighting Tigers were led by first-year second baseman EmmaGrace Scileppi, Williamson, N.Y., Williamson Central High School, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and by junior third baseman Deanna Palmer, Auburn, N.Y., Auburn High School, who went 1-for-3 with a double.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Thursday April 13 when they host the Bears of SUNY Potsdam for a non-conference doubleheader at Fighting Tiger Park beginning at 3:00 p.m.
