Canton, N.Y.: With the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play-offs fast approaching the SUNY Cobleskill baseball team closed out their weekend series versus the host Kangaroos of SUNY Canton on Saturday by splitting a league doubleheader taking the first game 21-2 then falling in the nightcap 11-8. With the split the NAC Western Division leading Fighting Tigers are currently 17-12 overall including an 12-1 record in NAC play while Canton is now 10-19 overall with a 7-6 conference mark.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers feasted on Kangaroo pitching to the tune of 21 runs on 22 hits, including nine for extra bases, and using an 11-run fourth inning to turn a 4-2 advantage into a 15-2 lead from which they never looked back.

Sophomore catcher Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown High School, blasted a grand slam home run in the first inning to start Cobleskill off running as part of a 3-for-5 effort that featured a double, a home run, two runs scored, four RBI effort supported by senior third baseman Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All Hallows High School, who was 3-for-6 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and three RBI and sophomore centerfielder Zach Ducorsky, Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, who was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Senior southpaw Devin Lewis, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, registered the victory to move to 3-1 overall on the season allowing two runs on four hits in five innings of work posting a career high of 11 strikeouts while walking only one Canton hitter.

In the series finale the Fighting Tigers continued to hit Kangaroo pitching hard as junior shortstop David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College, sophomore catcher Dylan Pohl, East Meadow, N.Y., East Meadow High School, and third baseman Logan Hutter all launched home runs in the game.

However, after taking an 8-6 lead in the top of the seventh inning the Fighting Tiger bullpen allowed the home team five runs on a pair of home runs as the Kangaroos closed the weekend with a walk-off grand slam off the bat of left fielder Nick Barone to decide the issue.

The Orange & Black will next be in action on Tuesday April 25 when they host the Pioneers of Utica College for a single game at Fighting Tiger Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
