Castleton, Vt.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team posted their most impressive outing of the season on Thursday evening sweeping the host Spartans of Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton 3-0 in a non-league match. The Fighting Tigers used a dominate front line effort to down the Spartans by set scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-15. With the victory Cobleskill is now 3-6 overall while VTSU-Castleton falls to 4-4 overall on the season.
The Fighting Tigers worked overtime to take the first set overcoming an extended stoppage of play late to correct a scoring error that reduced a 24-22 Cobleskill lead to 23-22. The two teams then battled thru a pair of ties when the visitors broke a 24-24 deadlock on a kill by first-year outside hitter
Hallie Gasner, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School, that made it 25-24 and a Spartan attack error which gave the victory to the visitors.
Cobleskill then led wire-to-wire in the second set as the Fighting Tiger front line pounded out 18 kills led by senior middle hitter/outside hitter
Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua North High School, and first-year opposite side hitter
Kathleen Smart, Nashville, Tenn., Pope John Paul II Prep.
The third set saw the Fighting Tigers jump out to an early 11-6 lead and never look back as once again the front line dominated play at the net with 14 kills as opposed to only three attack errors.
Alexis Miranda led the assault on the home team with 14 kills to go with three total blocks with
Kathleen Smart chipping in eight kills and four digs while first-year outside hitter
Emma Hinze, Altenburg, Mo., Saxon Lutheran High School, added nine kills and five digs in the win.
Cobleskill also received strong contributions up front from
Hallie Gasner with six kills and three digs.
The Fighting Tiger setter corps quarterbacked the team to perfection during the evening as first-year
Baylee Kirschberg, Lindenhurst, N.Y., Lindenhurst High School, had a game high of 18 assists along with four digs and a pair of kills with sophomore
Jade Ward, Miami, Fla., Felix Varela High School, tallying 15 assists and six digs on the evening.
The Orange & Black will next be in action over the weekend when they travel to Elmira, N.Y. for a triangular match hosted by the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College with the Bears of SUNY Potsdam. Cobleskill will meet the Soaring Eagles at 10:00 a.m. followed by a meeting with the Bears at 12:00 p.m.
