Elmira, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team dropped their season opener on Sunday afternoon to the host Soaring Eagles of Elmira College by a 2-0 margin in non-league action. With the loss the Fighting Tigers open the year with a 0-1 record while the Soaring Eagles move to 1-1 overall on the campaign.
The contest was a defensive struggle through the first 70 minutes of action when the home team scored in the 71
st minute when Elmira senior midfielder Sara Wagner, Horseheads, N.Y., Horseheads High School, converted a penalty kick to make it 1-0 Soaring Eagles. Elmira would add a late insurance goal in the 80
th minute when the Fighting Tigers extended their defense.
Cobleskill first-year goalkeeper
Jojo Leubner, Marcellus, N.Y., Marcellus High School, turned in a strong effort between the pipes for the Orange & Black in her first career start recording six saves on the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Tuesday September 5 when they travel to Purchase, N.Y. for a non-conference meeting with the Panthers of SUNY Purchase with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
