Cobleskill, NY: The Cobleskill women's volleyball team split two matches during Saturday's action at the Cobleskill Homecoming Classic, falling to Wells College in five sets, 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 25-15, 9-15, before sweeping Penn State Abington in three sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22.
Cobleskill finished the Homecoming Classic with a 1-1 record and is now 4-9 on the season.
Alexis Miranda (Nashua, NH/ Nashua North) led the Tigers with 22 kills, seven blocks and four aces in the loss to Wells College. Freshman
Emma Hinze (Altenburg, Mo/ Saxon Lutheran) added nine kills and 10 digs for Cobleskill.
Baylee Kirschberg (Lindenhurst, NY/ Lindenhurst) was all over the court, dishing out a game-high 26 assists.
Lydia McDonough (Wappinger Falls, NY/ John Jay) led the Tigers with 13 digs and Kirschberg added 11 digs.
After each team took a set, it was the Express of Wells College that took control of the game with a 2-1 advantage. The Tigers battled back in the fourth set receiving excellent play from to Miranda and McDonough. Cobleskill held a 9-8 lead before using six straight points to push it to 15-8.
In the final set, Cobleskill jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a kill by Miranda, but Wells College answered with a 4-0 run. With it all tied up at 7-7, the visitors used five straight points to put the game out of reach of the Tigers. The set finished 15-9.
Cobleskill finished the game with an advantage in digs 58-49, and both teams recorded a .171 attack percentage. Wells College finished with 53 kills compared to Cobleskill's 47.
In the win against Penn State Abington, it was Miranda that led the Tigers with nine kills while
Kathleen Smart (Nashville, Tenn/ Pope John Paul) chipped in eight kills. Kirschberg had another strong game finishing with 21 assists and
Kasey Orlowski (Hewitt, NJ/ West Milford) added five assists for the Tigers. McDonough recorded 12 digs in the win and Hinze with eight. Hinze also finished with a game-high five aces.
The Tigers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set thanks to kills by Miranda and
Hallie Gasner (Middleburgh, NY/ Middleburgh). The visiting Abington battled back, but the Tigers proved to be too much and took the first set 25-23. The second set saw Abington with an early 7-3 lead before Cobleskill clawed their way back to tie the game 10-10, after Smart spiked home a kill assisted by Kirschberg. The Tigers took control of the set by scoring five straight points to push their lead to 16-12. Eva Norris (Wolcott, NY/ North Rose-Wolcott) kill put the game to bed, 25-22.
In the final set, Abington started on the front foot and gained a 9-0 lead before the Tigers mounted their comeback to secure the home sweep.
Cobleskill record 9 aces to Abington's two and held the advantage in kills, 34-31. The Tigers finished with a .045 attack percentage and a massive 10 blocks.
The Tigers will be in action next Wednesday, October 4
th at 7:00 p.m. as they host SUNY Delhi in a NAC match at the Iorio Gymnasium.
