Cobleskill, N.Y.: With the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) post-season tournament fast approaching, the SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team posted an important victory over the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a 74-47 margin in a game between the NAC Western Division's top two programs. With the victory the Fighting Tigers improve to 18-1 overall including a 9-0 record in NAC play while the Kangaroos fall to 15-5 overall with a 7-3 mark in conference contests. The win also establishes a new Cobleskill women's program record for the most wins in a single season at the NCAA level of competition.
Leading 38-28 at the half the Fighting Tigers broke the game open in the third quarter outscoring the visiting Kangaroos 19-6 in the period to that a 57-34 lead from which they never looked back. Once again Cobleskill used a combination of strong three-point shooting going 8-for-17 from beyond the arch, 47.1 %, along with a defensive effort that saw the Orange & Black hold Canton to 15-of-60, 25.0%, from the field including 3-for-13, 23.1%, from three-point range.
Junior guard/forward
Antonia May, Amsterdam, N.Y., Amsterdam High School, had a game high of 20 points to go with six rebounds and three blocked shots while junior forward
Cara Walker, Phelps, N.Y., Midlakes High School, tallied 19 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists to cement the victory. Senior center
Logan Thayne, Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Hoosick Falls High School, also played a major role in the win notching her 11
th double/double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds along with three assists and a blocked shot.
The Fighting Tiger bench continued to play well in relief of the starters as sophomore forward
Sierra Goodson, Amsterdam, N.Y., Amsterdam High School, had six points and three rebounds and sophomore center
Emily Satterday, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, chipping in four points, six rebounds and a steal in the win.
Cobleskill will return to action on Tuesday January 30 when they travel to Marcy, N.Y. for a NAC meeting with the Wildcats of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
