Women's Volleyball Falls to VTSU-Johnson in NAC Matchup

Lyndonville, VT: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 by the VTSU-Johnson Badgers in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday, dropping the sets 25-19, 25-23, and 25-17.

Cobleskill's offense was paced by Hallie Gasner (Middleburgh, NY), who led the team with eight kills and added two service aces for a total of 10 points. Kathleen Smart (Nashville, Tenn./Pope John Paul II Prep) and Ciarra Jager (Stephentown, NY/New Lebanon) contributed six kills each, while Jade Ward (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) facilitated the offense with 17 assists.

On defense, Jojo Haycock (Bowie, Md.) put in a strong performance with 12 digs, while Smart added 18 digs, showcasing her all-around abilities. Despite solid defense, the Tigers struggled offensively, managing a hitting percentage of just .009 with 22 attack errors.

VTSU-Johnson held the edge in key categories, leading in kills (29-23), service aces (11-4), and assists (23-17). Cobleskill finished with 52 digs for the match.

In the opening set, both teams battled evenly, with the score tied at 16-16 before Johnson pulled ahead with a 3-0 run. The Tigers couldn't close the gap and dropped the set 25-19.

The second set mirrored the first, with the teams deadlocked at 16-16. Cobleskill then gained momentum behind kills from Gasner and a service ace from Tori Harrington (Esperance, NY/Schoharie), pulling ahead briefly. However, Johnson rallied to take a 23-22 lead. A crucial kill by Smart, assisted by Ward, tied the set at 23-23, but a setting error from Cobleskill allowed Johnson to regain the lead and win 25-23.

In the final set, Cobleskill jumped out to a 13-6 advantage before Johnson found their rhythm, tying the score at 16-16. A decisive 9-0 run by the Badgers sealed the match with a 25-17 victory.

Cobleskill will look to bounce back on Thursday, October 17th, when they host SUNY Delhi at 7:00 p.m. in a NAC showdown at the Iorio Gymnasium.
