Throggs Neck, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team fell in a tightly contested 1-0 match against Maritime College on Wednesday night at Reinhart Field.
Â
Cobleskill worked hard to break through Maritime's defense, managing five shots, including a close attempt on goal.
Andrew Rimes (Walden, NY/Mount Academy) led the attack with two shots, while
Connor Fancher (Worcester, NY) and
Tyler Szarek (Westmoreland, NY) added late attempts in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper
Joe Wille (Gilboa, NY) made five saves despite facing 21 shots from Maritime.
Â
The game's only goal came early, with Maritime's Jonathan Toma scoring unassisted from distance in the 5th minute. Cobleskill tightened up defensively after the goal, making it tough for the hosts to generate further chances in the first half.
Â
In the second half, the Fighting Tigers ramped up the pressure, creating several opportunities through a high press, but couldn't find the finishing touch. Their best chance came from a counterattack when Rimes delivered a cross to Fancher at the back post, but the shot went off target.
Â
Defensively,
Joshua Sanchez (Bronx, NY/New Visions) and
Samuel Spraker (Broadalbin-Perth, NY) played key roles in limiting Maritime's chances after the early goal. Despite matching the Privateers in fouls (6-6) and earning a corner kick (1-4), Cobleskill couldn't convert their few opportunities.
Â
The Tigers return home to face VTSU-Lyndon on senior day, Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m., as they look to bounce back.
