Cobleskill, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team clinched a thrilling 92-88 overtime victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at home, with the duo of
Logan Thayne and
Antonia May combining for over 60 points in the win.
Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) dominated on both ends, finishing with a game-high 33 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks while shooting 13-25 from the field and 5-6 from the line. May (Amsterdam, NY) poured in 30 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists, and made 11 of 12 free throws, including two clutch shots with just 2 seconds remaining to tie the game at 80-80 and force overtime.
Fellow senior
Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/BKW) contributed 14 points and six rebounds, while
Mady Victorin (Menands, NY/Shaker) added six points, three rebounds, and a block off the bench. First-year
Nana Rojas (Greenwich, NY) played big minutes in the second half, recording five points, four rebounds, and two steals to help Cobleskill hold their edge.
Cobleskill's 40.7% field-goal percentage just edged RPI's 42.0%, and their superior free-throw shooting (76.7% vs. 58.6%) was a key difference. The Fighting Tigers also led in points in the paint (56-46), second-chance points (21-16), and rebounds (52-50), though RPI's deep bench held a 47-13 scoring advantage.
Cobleskill jumped out early as Thayne established an inside presence and May connected on a three-pointer, building a 31-17 lead by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Cobleskill extended their lead to 18 points, 46-28, with a Thayne three-pointer set up by
Kyra Pence (Randolph, NY) at the 5:04 mark. RPI began chipping away, but a layup from Meacham helped Cobleskill head into halftime with a 51-36 advantage.
RPI came roaring back in the second half, outscoring Cobleskill 14-13 in the third quarter behind strong play from Siena Smith and Julia Rowe. The Engineers finally seized their first lead of the game at 76-74 with just over two minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Thayne and May then led Cobleskill on a 4-0 run to retake a 78-76 lead at the 1:52 mark, only for RPI to tie the game again on a late layup by Callie Flynn. RPI went ahead on free throws with 10 seconds left, but May, fouled on a drive to the basket with 2 seconds left, calmly hit two free throws to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Meacham opened the scoring for Cobleskill, and Thayne added a layup off a Rojas assist to push the lead to 88-84 with under a minute left. May's flawless free-throw shooting and Thayne's defensive presence kept Cobleskill in control. With ice in her veins, May sealed the 92-88 victory with four straight free throws, capping a hard-fought, resilient team performance.
The Fighting Tigers return to action on Tuesday, November 19, hosting VTSU-Castleton in a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Iorio Gymnasium.
