Cobleskill, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team delivered a commanding performance at home on Tuesday night, rolling to a 78-59 win over Vermont State University Castleton. With strong showings from senior leaders
Logan Thayne and
Antonia May, who poured in 21 and 25 points respectively, the Fighting Tigers improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) was a force on both ends, tallying 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including three makes from beyond the arc, and pulling down 10 rebounds to complete her fourth straight double-double of the season. She also dished out five assists, anchoring Cobleskill's balanced offensive attack. May (Amsterdam, NY) was similarly impressive, hitting a sizzling 10-of-15 from the field while adding two rebounds, five steals, and an assist. Senior
Taylor Meacham also stepped up, contributing 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists, helping Cobleskill stay in sync offensively.
Cobleskill's team stats highlighted their shooting efficiency, as they hit 40.3% from the floor compared to Castleton's 30.6%. The Fighting Tigers were especially effective in capitalizing on Castleton's mistakes, turning 27 turnovers into 33 points. Though Castleton won the rebounding battle 56-40, Cobleskill's sharp ball movement led to 19 assists and consistent scoring opportunities.
The Fighting Tigers took control early, racing to an 18-7 lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter after an 8-0 run capped by Thayne's layup and a three-pointer from Meacham, assisted by
Annie Canales (North Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley). By the quarter's end, Cobleskill held a 21-8 advantage, dictating the game's tempo and excelling on both ends of the floor.
Castleton attempted to rally in the second quarter, but Cobleskill's aggressive defense and physical play in the paint held them in check. May's perimeter defense and a fastbreak layup following a steal extended Cobleskill's lead to 30-10, allowing the team to head into halftime with a comfortable 40-23 cushion.
In the second half, Cobleskill sustained their momentum, with May and Thayne combining for a quick 12 points in the third quarter, including two fast-break layups from May. Meacham capped the quarter with a jumper that extended Cobleskill's lead to 32 points, their largest of the night. Although Castleton closed the gap slightly in the fourth, Cobleskill's early dominance proved too much to overcome as they secured a fourth consecutive victory.
The Fighting Tigers will next travel to Arlington, VA, for the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament, where they'll face nationally-ranked #15 Gettysburg College on Friday, November 22, at 7:00 p.m.
