Arlington, VA: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team battled fiercely against #15 Gettysburg College on the opening night of the Pablo Coto Tournament hosted by Marymount University on Friday night but ultimately fell short, 70-61.
Leading the way for Cobleskill was senior
Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY), who scored 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Senior center
Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) recorded her fifth consecutive double-double, tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds, along with two blocks. Thayne shot 7-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Freshman
Nana Rojas (Greenwich, NY) contributed with 10 points, three rebounds, and an assist.
Cobleskill shot 42.6 percent from the field compared to Gettysburg's 44.3 percent, with the Cobleskill also holding an edge in three-point shooting at 57.1 percent to the Bullets 30 percent. Cobleskill made 13 of 16 free throws for an impressive 81.3 percent, while Gettysburg shot 62.5 percent from the line. Gettysburg out-rebounded Cobleskill 37-26, helping them maintain control in key moments throughout the game. The Fighting Tigers bench outscored the bullets 20-9, but the active hands of Gettysburg came up with ten steals that turned into 26 points compared to Cobleskill's four steals that turned into 17 points.
The game began as a close contest, with May's deep three-pointer tying the score at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. A pair of free throws by Rojas put Cobleskill ahead 19-17 with less than a minute left, and a floating layup by
Talia Washington (Schenectady, NY)Â extended their lead to 21-17. Cobleskill held onto a narrow 21-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Gettysburg opened with a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead. The teams traded baskets, but the Bullets pulled away with a decisive run that extended their advantage to 39-26 with under two minutes left in the half. A 5-0 scoring burst by May, highlighted by a tough and-one, brought the Tigers within eight, but they entered halftime down 43-32. By the half, May led Cobleskill with 14 points, while Thayne added seven points and five rebounds.
The third quarter saw the Tigers fighting to close the gap. Thayne scored early off an assist from Canales, narrowing the margin to 45-34. Gettysburg responded to increase their lead, but a three-pointer by Thayne, followed by back-to-back threes from Washington and Rojas, cut the deficit to eight points at 53-45. Rojas then hit a step-back jumper to bring the Tigers closer at 57-49, though a buzzer-beating basket gave Gettysburg a 61-51 edge heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Gettysburg extended their lead to 67-54 with just over six minutes remaining. A resilient Thayne connected on another basket to make it 69-59 with four minutes left, and her pull-up jumper cut the deficit to eight at 69-61 with 2:38 remaining. Despite Cobleskill's late efforts, Gettysburg held on for the victory.
The Tigers will look to bounce back tomorrow as they face Baruch College at 5:30 p.m. in the consolation game of the Pablo Coto Tournament hosted by Marymont University.
