Oneonta, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team opened their season with a 71-58 road win over Hartwick College, powered by a dominant second half.
Reigning NAC Player of the Year
Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) led the charge with a game-high double-double of 27 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 52.9% from the field (9-17) and an impressive 57.1% from three-point range (4-7). Fellow senior
Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks, while first-year player
Nana Rojas (Greenwich, NY) contributed eight points and four assists in her collegiate debut.
Cobleskill shook off a slow start, using a technical foul by Hartwick in the first quarter as a turning point, leading to a quick 6-0 run. A pair of three-pointers by
Annie Canales (North Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) helped establish a 12-9 lead midway through the quarter, but the Hawks capitalized on a late Cobleskill turnover to end the first up 21-20.
In the second quarter, Thayne kept Cobleskill ahead with her sharp shooting, giving the Tigers a 36-33 lead just before halftime. She led all scorers with 13 points by the break, supported by Canales' eight points and May's all-around contributions of three points, six rebounds, two assists, and a block. The first half featured 11 lead changes and six ties, with Cobleskill shooting 41.7% from deep to Hartwick's 25%.
The Tigers then clamped down defensively in the third quarter, holding Hartwick to seven points and outscoring the Hawks 11-7. Thayne's rebounding and scoring in the paint sparked a Cobleskill run that stretched their lead to 47-39 by the end of the quarter. A steal and layup by Rojas early in the fourth gave the Tigers a 53-40 edge, their largest lead at that point.
Hartwick mounted a 10-2 rally to pull within five, but Thayne stepped up and answered with her own 6-0 burst, pushing Cobleskill's advantage back to double digits. She drilled a deep three, assisted by
Kyra Pence (Randolph, NY), and then connected on another three with a feed from May to make it 64-52. A late three-pointer from May, set up by
Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/BKW), sealed the victory.
The Tigers will next face Alfred State on Tuesday, November 12, with a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
