Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cobleskill Battles but Falls to #1 NYU on the Road

Cara Walker Scores a Season-High 23 Points in the Road Loss

New York, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team displayed determination but were bested by the top-ranked #1 New York University (NYU) Violets, 119-55, in Friday night's road game at the John A. Paulson Center.

Leading the Fighting Tigers was senior Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes), who recorded a season-high 23 points on 6-of-15 shooting, connecting on 10-of-11 free throws, and adding four rebounds. Senior Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) contributed 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a block. From beyond the arc, Annie Canales (North Adams, Mass/Hoosac Valley) made her presence felt with three three-pointers, finishing with nine points. Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY), ranked 15th nationally in points per game, managed seven points and five rebounds while facing relentless defensive attention from the Violets.

NYU demonstrated why they are the nation's top-ranked team, shooting an impressive 56.9% from the field and converting 50% of their three-point attempts (18-of-36) compared to Cobleskill's 28.1% and 35% (7-of-20), respectively. The Violets also controlled the boards with a 46-30 advantage, generating 21 second-chance points to Cobleskill's six. NYU's bench played a pivotal role, contributing 47 points compared to the Tigers' nine. Cobleskill forced 15 turnovers while committing 26 but showed composure at the free-throw line, hitting 80%.

The game opened with NYU showcasing their dominance, building a 16-0 lead before Cobleskill responded with a 5-0 run fueled by Walker and May. The Tigers ended the first quarter down 26-8 under NYU's suffocating defense. NYU extended their advantage in the second quarter with sharp shooting and fast breaks, taking a 65-22 lead at halftime. Cobleskill displayed renewed energy in the third, highlighted by a three-pointer from May, but NYU's depth and precision remained decisive. The Tigers showed tenacity throughout, but ultimately fell 119-55 on the road.

The Fighting Tigers, now 8-2 overall, return to action on Saturday, December 7, hosting Lesley University at the Iorio Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in a North Atlantic Conference clash.
