Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team captured their first ever North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Western Division Championship by dominating the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a 76-33 margin on Saturday afternoon at the Iorio Gymnasium. With the victory the Fighting Tigers extend the current program record winning streak to 15 games while improving to 25-1 overall to tie the program record for most wins in a single season while the Kangaroos close their season with a 21-6 overall record.
The Fighting Tigers led from tip-off to final buzzer in the contest using a suffocating defense to secure the victory not allowing the Kangaroos to reach double figures in scoring in any of the game's first three quarters as Cobleskill held the visitors to only two points in the second quarter to take a 36-11 lead into the break from which they never looked back.
On the afternoon Cobleskill held Canton to only 10-for-51, 19.6%, from the field including only 1-of-10, 10.0%, from three-point range while forcing the visitors into 21 turnovers and controlling the backboards by a 46-to-28 tally.
Offensively the Fighting Tigers once again showed great efficiency hitting on 29-of-56, 51.8%, of their field goal attempts including an impressive 10-of-18, 55.6%, from beyond the three-point line.
Once again the Orange & Black received all-around contributions from a number of players led by junior forward
Cara Walker, Phelps, N.Y., Midlakes High School, who posted her second double/double of the event with 18 points and 10 rebounds, junior guard/forward
Antonia May, Amsterdam, N.Y., Amsterdam High School, who had 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocked shots and from senior center
Logan Thayne, Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Hoosick Falls High School, who had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocked shots on the afternoon.
Sophomore guard
Annie Canales, North Adams, Mass., Hoosac Valley High School, came off the bench to score 10 points and pass out two assists while senior guard
Taylor Meacham, Berne, N.Y., Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, added six points, four assists and three rebounds on the day.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday February 24 when they travel to Castine, Maine for the NAC Championship Game to be hosted by the league's Eastern Division Champion Mariners of the Maine Maritime Academy with tip-off tentatively scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
