Hackettstown, N.J.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's lacrosse team returned to action on Saturday afternoon breaking into the win column by taking an 18-10 decision over the host Cyclones of Centenary University of New Jersey in non-league action. With the victory the Fighting Tigers are now 1-2 overall on the year while the Cyclones fall to 1-5 overall.
The Fighting Tigers jumped out to an early 7-2 first quarter lead as senior attackman
Sean D'Amaro, Northport, N.Y., Northport High School, scored three times in the period to lead the Cobleskill attack.
The Cyclones cut the lead to 7-4 at half time as the Fighting Tigers outshot their hosts 13-to-7 in the second quarter but could not find the back of the net in the period despite forcing Centenary into five turnovers in the frame.
The Fighting Tigers created distance from their hosts in the third quarter erupting for eight goals to extend their lead to 15-7 as junior midfielder
Albert Sippio, Syracuse, N.Y., Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central, scored four times in the period.
Cobleskill put the game away in the fourth quarter as
Sean D'Amaro scored twice and
Albert Sippio once to hold off the home team and cement the 18-10 victory.
On the afternoon the Fighting Tigers outshot the Cyclones 59-25, held a 42-27 advantage in ground balls picked-up and won 22-of-32 face-off opportunities.
Albert Sippio led the Cobleskill attack with six goals and a pair of assists on the afternoon to go with three ground balls while
Sean D'Amaro chipped in five goals and an assist. The visitors also received a strong outing from sophomore midfielder
Trevor Masocco, Eden, N.Y., Eden High School, who dominated the face-off circle winning 17-of-24 chances while picking up a team high of 12 ground balls along with two goals three assists and a pair of caused turnovers.
First-year midfielder
Alex Baker, Guildford, Vt. Brattleboro Union High School, continued his strong play with two goals and an assist with fellow first-year midfielder Rob Staubitz, East Rockaway, N.Y., East Rockaway High School, adding two goals and four ground balls to the team's victory totals. Junior defender
Tyler Jaffee, Plattekill, N.Y., Wallkill High School, was also a factor in the win with six ground balls for the Orange & Black.
In the net, first-year goalkeeper
James Meier, Guilderland, N.Y., Guilderland High School, recorded his first collegiate victory making 10 saves on the afternoon.
Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday March 23 when they open North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play by traveling to Delhi, N.Y. for a meeting with the Broncos of SUNY Delhi with face-off at 1:00 p.m.
