Samuel Gutierrez Slugs Fighting Tigers to 12-8 Win Over Amherst College at RussMatt Invitational

Auburndale, Fl.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team opened their annual spring break Florida road trip on Sunday afternoon by winning a rollercoaster contest from the Mammoths of Amherst College by a 12-8 margin at the 2024 Russmatt Central Florida Invitational. With the win the Fighting Tigers are now 3-8 overall on the season while the Mammoths drop to 2-1 overall on the year.

The Fighting Tigers overcame six errors and the surrendering of an 8-3 lead in the seventh inning with a four run eighth inning highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of senior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Queens, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, to give Cobleskill the 12-8 margin of victory.

Junior right hander Jason Treffiletti, Cohoes, N.Y., Shaker High School, got the win in relief going one inning allowing one run on one hit striking out one and walking one to move his record to 1-0 on the year with relief help from first-year reliever Tyler Scorzelli, Latham, N.Y., Colonie High School, who recorded the game's last out to notch his first collegiate save.

Offensively, Samuel Gutierrez led the way to the victory going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and three RBI while senior third baseman Chris Champlin, Jefferson, N.Y., South Kortright High School, went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBI on the afternoon.
