SUNY Cobleskill Baseball Drops 6-2 Decision to Washington & Jefferson at RussMatt Invitational

Fighting Tiger Baseball Closes RussMatt Invitational With 6-2 Loss to Washington & Jefferson

Davenport, Fla.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team closed out their spring break trip to the 2024 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday afternoon by dropping a 6-2 decision to the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson University. With the loss the Fighting Tigers fall to 3-14 overall on the year while the Presidents improve to 6-7 overall on the campaign.

The Fighting Tigers generated all of their offense in the first inning when senior shortstop David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College walked with one out then scored when senior first baseman Samuel Gutierrez, Queens, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, blasted his fourth home run of the season to right field to give Cobleskill a 2-0 lead.

However, from that point on it was all Presidents as Washington & Jefferson shut down Cobleskill's attack the rest of the way holding the Orange & Black to only two hits while scoring six times off Fighting Tiger pitching to post the victory.

Senior starter Wyatt Palmer, Camden, N.Y., Camden High School/Cayuga Community College, was tagged with the loss after allowing four earned runs on eight hits striking out three while walking none.

Offensively, Samuel Gutierrez went 1-for-4 with two RBI with sophomore right fielder Logan Firment, Andes, N.Y., South Kortright High School, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

The Fighting Tigers are scheduled to return to action on Thursday March 28 when they travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. for a non-conference solo contest versus the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
