Westminster, Md: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team fell to Mount Aloysius in three sets (25-21, 25-7, 25-10) on Friday night in their opening match of the two day McDaniel College Invitational hosted in Westminster, Maryland.
Despite a competitive start, Cobleskill fought to maintain momentum throughout the match. Key performances included
Emma Hinze (Altenburg, Mo/Saxon Lutheran) and
Kathleen Smart (Nashville, Tenn/Pope John Paul II Prep), who each tallied five kills, Hinze added two services aces for the Fighting Tigers. While second-year setter
Baylee Kirschberg (Lindenhurst, NY) added 11 assists and six digs. Cobleskill's offense, however, struggled to find consistency, hitting just -.036 on the night with 23 kills and 25 attack errors.
Mount Aloysius, led by Molly Richards' 15 kills, overpowered Cobleskill with a .337 hitting percentage and strong serving. The Cobleskill defense, led by
Jojo Haycock (Bowie, Md) with five digs and Smart with nine digs, had a difficult time containing the Mounties' efficient offense.
After a closely contested first set, Cobleskill faltered in the final two frames, unable to overcome their own attack errors and Mount Aloysius' aggressive serving and attacking.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action tomorrow as they face McDaniel College at 10 a.m. followed by a match against Notre Dame of Maryland at 2:00 p.m. to close out the invitational.
