Cobleskill, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team came up just short in a thrilling five-set match against Elmira College on Friday evening, falling 3-2 at the Iorio Gymnasium.
After dropping the first set 25-23, Cobleskill fought back led by steller play from
Emma Hinze (Altenburg, Mo) and
Kathleen Smart (Nashville, Tenn.) to take the second and third sets, 27-25 and 25-19. The Tigers appeared to be in control heading into the fourth, but Elmira rallied to win 25-17, forcing a decisive fifth set. Despite Cobleskill's momentum, the Soaring Eagles surged ahead in the final frame, sealing the match with a 15-4 victory.
Second year
Emma Hinze led the Tigers with 13 kills, hitting an impressive .417 for the match, while
Kathleen Smart added 13 kills and three aces. Setter
Baylee Kirschberg (Lindenhurst, NY) dished out 19 assists and contributed two aces, while first year
Ciarra Jager (Stephentown, NY) provided defensive strength with four solo blocks and five kills.
Elmira was paced by Madi Conti, who registered a match-high 16 kills, and setter Asia Curkendall, who posted a double-double with 25 assists and 13 kills.
Cobleskill will return to action tomorrow, September 7
th, as they host SUNY Potsdam at 12:00 p.m. followed by a 4:00 p.m. match against Smith College to close out the Cobleskill Fall Quad Invitational.
