Chicopee, MA: The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team came up short in a tightly contested 2-1 road loss to Elms College on Saturday afternoon. Despite taking an early lead, the Tigers couldn't withstand a determined Elms side, dropping to 1-3 on the season.
In goal,
Adam Champlin (South Kortright, NY) delivered a strong performance for Cobleskill, recording eight saves on nine shots to help keep the game close. Â First-year forward
Tyler Szarek (Westmoreland, NY) scored his first goal of his collegiate career and
Connor Fancher (Worcester, NY) added his first assist of the season. Â
Cobleskill was on the front foot to begin the game and struck first with a goal from Szarek in the 8th minute when he collected the ball calmly in the box and picked out a corner, assisted by Fancher. The early goal shifted the momentum in Cobleskill's favor, giving the Tigers a brief advantage. However, Elms responded in the 30th minute with a strike from Jacobo Molina Ferrer to tie the game at 1-1.
Elms took the lead just before halftime, scoring what would be the game-winning goal in the 40th minute on an own goal off a corner kick. Despite their best efforts in the second half, the Tigers couldn't find the equalizer as the Blazer defense held their ground and stood up to the challenge of holding on to the lead.Â
Elms held an advantage in shots (19-9) and shots on target (10-2). Both teams ended the game with three corners each.
The Tigers will look to bounce on September 11
th as they travel to Mount Saint Mary College for a non-conference night match up starting at 7:00 p.m.
