Cobleskill, N.Y. – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team came up short at home on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to Husson University in North Atlantic Conference play at the Cobleskill Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Senior
Jessica Carney (Hopkinton, NH) provided the highlight for the Fighting Tigers, scoring her third goal of the season midway through the second half. Senior defender
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) set up the play with a perfectly placed through ball that split the Eagles' back line, finding Carney in stride. Carney calmly slotted her shot past the charging keeper to put Cobleskill on the board.
Bryant also anchored the Tigers' defense throughout the match, while
Emma Grant (Canastota, NY) registered a strong effort up front, recording a shot on target.
In goal, first-year keeper
Samantha Fausti (Clayton, WA.) was busy throughout the contest, finishing with 13 saves, including an impressive stop on a second-half penalty kick.
The Eagles struck early, taking a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in on a corner-kick goal from Jaquie Pangburn. Pangburn added her second tally nine minutes later to give Husson a 2-0 advantage at the break. Cobleskill's best first-half opportunity came in the 35th minute when Grant battled through a defender and fired from distance, but the shot was handled by the Husson keeper.
Husson extended its lead with a pair of quick goals early in the second half before Carney's strike made it 4-1 with 30 minutes to play. The Eagles responded immediately with two more goals to secure the 6-1 result.
The Eagles held a 37-5 advantage in total shots and a 19-4 edge in shots on goal, while Cobleskill's Fausti and back line fought hard to keep the hosts in the match.
