Big Second Quarter Fuels Cobleskill to 89-52 Win Over VTSU-Johnson

Logan Thayne posts NCAA leading 21st double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds

Cobleskill, NY: The Fighting Tigers kicked off senior weekend in dominant fashion, rolling to an 89-52 victory over VTSU-Johnson on Friday night in Iorio Gymnasium behind another standout performance from Logan Thayne.

Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) led the way with her 21st double-double of the season, posting 20 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks off the bench while shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 1-of-3 from deep. Fellow senior Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) put together a well-rounded performance with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block, hitting 6-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/BKW) chipped in with eight points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Audriana Hollister (Mooers Forks, NY/Maple Hill) added seven points and three boards.

Cobleskill controlled the game with efficient shooting and dominance in the paint, finishing at 47.9 percent from the field compared to VTSU-Johnson's 36.0 percent. While the Fighting Tigers hit eight threes, their 30.8 percent clip from deep trailed Johnson's 33.3 percent. However, they capitalized on turnovers, turning 25 Badger giveaways into 36 points, while the visitors managed just six points off Cobleskill's 12 turnovers. The Tigers dominated the glass with a 44-32 rebounding edge, including 21 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points. Bench production was another major factor, as Cobleskill's reserves outscored Johnson's 65-11. Inside, the Tigers imposed their will with a 46-26 advantage in the paint, showcasing a complete team effort.

The game opened with a quick 5-0 Cobleskill lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from Tryhnati Donato (Stamford, NY) off a feed from Kyra Pence (Randolph, NY). Johnson briefly took a 10-9 lead with 4:43 left in the first before Cobleskill responded with a free throw from Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) to reclaim the advantage. A 4-0 run to close the quarter gave the Tigers an 18-14 edge heading into the second.

Cobleskill erupted in the second quarter, delivering a 14-0 run in the first four minutes to seize control at 31-14. Thayne and Walker fueled the surge with strong inside and outside play, while sharp passing led to easy buckets. A three-pointer from Annie Canales (North Adams, MA), set up by May, extended the lead to 39-18 with under three minutes remaining. Back-to-back jumpers from Mady Victorin (Menands, NY/Shaker) pushed the advantage to 43-21 just before the half, and Cobleskill took a commanding 44-23 lead into the break.

Walker opened the third quarter with a smooth pull-up jumper before Cobleskill ripped off a 7-0 run, capped by a Walker three-pointer, to stretch the lead to 57-30. Late in the quarter, Walker notched her third assist by finding Victorin for a mid-range jumper, giving the Tigers a 63-35 advantage heading into the final frame.

Donato drilled her second three of the game early in the fourth, making it 70-37 with eight minutes to go. Sierra Goodson (Amsterdam, NY) delivered the final blow, draining a three-pointer with four minutes left to give Cobleskill an 80-44 lead. The Tigers coasted the rest of the way, securing a dominant 89-52 divisional win over the Badgers.

Cobleskill wraps up its regular season tomorrow as they celebrate Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. as they host VTSU-Lyndon in their final home game of the regular season.

Game Note: This victory marks Coach Shelby Preston's 100th career win as part of the Cobleskill coaching staff. A former standout for the Fighting Tigers from 2013-2017, Preston continues to make her mark on the program.
